Ford Dishes Some Info on the 2020 Shelby GT500
It was a foregone conclusion that another Shelby GT500 was coming. How could Ford leave that alone? The previous version was insane when compared to the other S197s. But with the launch of the S550, Ford kicked performance up across the board, so it only seems logical a new GT500 would be once again completely bonkers.
Thankfully, Ford revealed that the upcoming GT500 will be the most powerful production Mustang ever. It will be back next year as a 2020 model, so not everything has been completely hammered out. What it will say is that peak output will be over 700 horsepower. That’s great, because Ford has been getting whomped in the recent horsepower wars.
Everyone’s debating just how Ford will power this mighty GT500. The leading theory, which is accompanied by some supposedly legit photos of secret prototypes, is that the car will use the GT350’s engine, mated to a supercharger. In a way that sounds great, but it also seems like a crime to put a whining supercharger on that flat-plane crank V-8 because it sounds so awesome naturally aspirated.
There are so many questions, but with a launch coming next year, answers can’t be too far out.
