Volvo Teases New Compact Concept
Once again Volvo is teasing us, this time with a mysterious compact. We know the concept is the first vehicle to ride on the company’s new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), but that’s about it.
The photos were released on Snapchat because Volvo’s hip that way. It’s an obvious attempt by the Swedes to stay relevant with the youth, who are the target for future 40-series vehicles.
I have to agree with others that this most likely is a sneak peek at the XC40. When I reached out to Volvo before about the rumored compact crossover, they gave the standard “we don’t comment on future vehicles” line.
You’ll notice plastic cladding around the wheel arch. It probably extends down the side of the concept, just like certain other XC models. Some think the upright front fascia is another sign it’s not a crossover and not a car, but the S90 does have a similar look.
Like other new or redesigned Volvos, this concept features Thor’s Hammer headlights. It’s no surprise that they’re going to be included on each new model.
The peek at the CMA in the buff gives us a little hint at what the rumored future S40 and V40 have in store. Among the details is theater-style seating, room for a battery pack and the ability to expand the length and track width.
Expect to see the XC40 likely on sale late in 2017. It will be fighting against other small luxury crossovers, a segment of the market that’s seen explosive growth.
