Volvo Shows Off Concept Versions of its Upcoming 40 Series
In Volvo’s current U.S. lineup, the smallest series of vehicles the brand offers is its 60 series, but it’s looking to infiltrate the fast-growing compact luxury segments. Today, the Swedish automaker launched a new pair of concept cars that further display the brand’s seriousness in going smaller.
These two rigs, which are known as the 40 Series concepts, show that Volvo is also breaking its trend of look-alike rigs in different sizes. The crossover, known as the 40.1 features the long hood and wheels-to-the-corners look that the new XC90 boasts, giving it a sporty stance. The back end gains Volvo’s signature vertical taillights while the front boasts the Thor’s Hammer headlights. Outside of these similarities, the 40.1 is unique.
The sedan model, known as the 40.2, doesn’t take too many design cues from existing models, save for its own version of the Thor’s Hammer headlights. This model also features a slightly higher ride height than most sedans and some mild body cladding, leading me to believe this could be a Cross Country model.
While these two concepts are different in appearance, they are related by more than just a name. These models are both based on Volvo’s new Compact Modular Architecture. This modular approach allows for more advancement without huge spikes in pricing and it streamlines production.
While Volvo didn’t announce many details about the powertrain options in these 40 Series concepts, it did announce that there will be an electric version with roughly 215 miles of range and a T5 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid that uses a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine and an electrified seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The traditional gasoline engines, on the other hand, remain a mystery.
We’ll bring you more details as Volvo releases them, so stay tuned for updates.
