In 2012, the Subaru Impreza received a complete overhaul, but little else has changed for the all-wheel-drive sedan and hatchback since. At the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, however, the automaker decided it was time to show off a conceptual version of the Impreza hatchback in an attempt to gauge buyer interest in a new design.

I must say, if I may cast a ballot for the Impreza’s new design, this would earn my vote. The concept holds many of Subaru’s signature items, like its clean and simple look, the hexagon front grille, and flowing lines, but it tweaks them just enough to show a little more emotion than the current Impreza.

Up front, the hexagon grille gains a more upright look and the fascia features lines that seem to flow from the corners of the grille. The headlights are completely new, and feature a modern look, while the fog lights and their surrounds are similarly restyled.

Down the sides, the Impreza concept features more exaggerated lines on the fenders, though they are far from being over the top. Also new is a more aggressive scallop on the lower third of the car, giving it a more aggressive look than the current model without making it look silly.

Around back, the elongated taillights give the rear end a wider and bolder look, while the bumper features a more shapely appearance. One thing of note about the bumper is its obvious lack of an exhaust exit point. This could mean nothing, but it could also mean that the Impreza may gain a green powertrain option.

For now, there is no mention of when the next-gen Impreza will debut, but knowing Subaru, it will look nothing like this concept. Sorry, but it is a sad truth about Subaru’s design team; they can create great concepts, but their production models fall flat. Hopefully Subie will break this trend with the Impreza, but I am not expecting it.
