Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ Will Get Power Boost

The moment people have been waiting for since the 86 and BRZ originally launched has finally arrived, maybe. Japanese site Best Car claims to have definitive information that not only will Toyota and Subaru actually continue making their little sports coupe, it will get a significant power increase.

This comes after years of company executives claiming the 86/BRZ have enough power, like everyone is just a bunch of whiners. By crowding internet forums and social media with hateful comments about that anemic boxer engine, it looks like fans have won. If Best Car is to be believed, the engine from the Ascent will be dropped into the next generation of the twins.

That’s a 2.4-liter boxer engine, so it’s not a huge upgrade on displacement. While in the Ascent it’s turbocharged, the report makes no mention if that’s going to be in the cards for the 86/BRZ. It should, because after all this waiting, giving just a small power increase really isn’t going to cut it for enthusiasts.

In the meantime, we all just have to wait and see. This report could turn out to be wildly inaccurate, or we might finally get the affordable sports coupe of our dreams.
