With the Tokyo Motor Show in full swing, all kinds of cool cars are breaking cover. The real show-stoppers, though, are two concepts from Mazda. Both have dramatic designs, and could signal an amazing shift for the brand.
The Vision Coupe is supposed to be a design study for future Mazdas in general. Thanks to its name, and the sporty appearance of the car, everyone’s hoping this signals a concept version of the RX-9.
It’s long, sexy, and so fluid it just fills me with hope for the future of car design. In other words, it’s exactly the opposite of the current Honda Civic. One of the cleverest elements of the concept are the tiny taillights. Everyone seems to think cramming some huge light bar with a whole series of LED diodes looks great. The level of restraint shown by Mazda is perfect.
Meanwhile, the Kai Concept is obviously a concept version of the Mazda3 Hatchback. Its design will likely influence the compact vehicles in Mazda’s lineup. While it’s not as clean and sexy as the Vision Coupe, it’s still pretty impressive.
Mazda even went so far as to put a Skyactiv-X gasoline engine in the Kai Concept. It’s supposed to have other advanced onboard technologies I’m sure we’ll all hear about in the coming days, weeks, and months.
