Subaru Cooking Up a New SVX Coupe

Few seem to remember the old Subaru SVX coupe, which pre-dated the BRZ and even the WRX in the United States. The old model was a little funky in its design, complete with half side windows, but it got the ball rolling for Subaru to make cars that were made more for driving fast instead of blending in at local farmers markets and drum circles. While nothing is official yet, automotive industry website Motoring is reporting that the Japanese automaker is cooking up a new version of the SVX, which will be larger than the BRZ. This is probably good news, considering that the long-term viability of the BRZ, at least in its current shared platform with Toyota, is potentially on the rocks. If you think that the BRZ is underpowered, you should be happy with the rumors flying around about the upcoming SVX (or whatever Subie decides to call the model). It is supposed to be more powerful and have a sexier design that leans more toward the looks of the VIZIV-2 Concept. Interestingly enough, the rumors also point toward Subaru building the car on the same platform as the replacement for the Tribeca, the crossover with a third row fit only for teddy bears and dolls. How such a platform will make the new car sporty is questionable, as is the entire rumor, but that’s the way things go in this industry. Supposedly, it will be powered by a flat-six engine that can be paired up with a plug-in electric motor for some hybrid goodness. The good news is that it looks likely that the new SVX will come with symmetrical all-wheel drive, which is another point purists have complained about with the BRZ. This project is so deeply enshrouded in rumors that so far there is no official concept vehicle. If it’s even the least bit true, look for something of that sort in the next year or so.
