Ford has a slight problem, but depending on how you look at it, you may spin it as a golden opportunity. Reuters says doors on 2015 to 2017 F-150s and 2017 Super Duty models could possibly open at speed.
It’s all about perspective. Sure, having bare asphalt rushing past you a few feet away with little protection might seem scary, if you’re the nervous type. Or, you could look at it as a brilliant way to have a Jeep experience in your Ford. It’s really about choice.
If you want your truck fixed, because you’re a killjoy, Ford says the problem stems from the side door latches freezing. Apparently, the actuation cables might bend or kink. That means the latch doesn’t engage, even though the door looks closed. It’s just another reason to wear a seatbelt.
To fix the problem, if you want to call it that, is to install water shields to prevent damage to components. Ford also will have dealers inspect truck door latch mechanisms for anything bent or kinky. Oh, wait.
So far there’s no timetable for the fix. Ford says it’s not aware of any serious incidents, including injuries, stemming from the problem.
