Recall Alert: Your Mazda Hatch Could Seriously Maim You

If you or someone you know owns a Mazda, you need to know 2.2 million of them have been recalled. The problem is that some rear hatches can suddenly fall. That might sound painful, but it could cause serious injuries or maybe even deaths. All it takes is one kid climbing in to get his soccer gear out for practice, the hatch falls and the worst happens.

According to The Detroit News, this recall is for 2010 to 2013 Mazda3 5-door models, 2012 to 2015 Mazda5s, 2016 CX-3s and 2013 to 2016 CX-5s. If you own one of these vehicles, check that Mazda has your current contact info.

The problem has to do with a faulty coating on the lift supports for the hatch or rear tailgate. Instead of protecting against corrosion like it should, road salt can get through and make the supports corrode to the point they break. Not only could the hatch or liftgate hit a person, the shrapnel from the breaking supports could also pose a safety risk. Fortunately, there are no reports of injuries or accidents of any kind.

Notifications are going out to Mazda owners in September or October telling them when to take their vehicle to a local dealer. The plan is to just replace the hatch supports, which will have the correct anti corrosion coating.
