Volkswagen Taps Microsoft to Expand Its Cloud
Volkswagen’s Automotive Cloud is coming to the U.S. and China, thanks to a new deal with Microsoft. It’s a critical step in the German automaker’s bid to offer connected driving services to people all around the world. It’s already been up and running in Europe.
What this could mean for you is the ability to stream music and other media into your car while you’re driving pretty much anywhere. The cloud would also help you find parking using up-to-date info, as well as locate the nearest charger.
The Automotive Cloud will be offered for the new ID line of electric vehicles, which launch in 2020.
You’re going to see even more of these strategic alliances between automakers and tech companies, like them or not. The alternative is tech companies making their own cars, or buying automakers. By acting now, Volkswagen is reading the writing on the wall and trying to get ahead of the trend.
