Maserati Seems to Know Nothing About the Alfieri

When Maserati debuted the Alfieri sports car, the world was left with jaws dragging on the floor. This beautiful sports coupe was everything that the brand needed to finally compete with the Porsche 911. At that time, Maserati had aggressive goals of having the Alfieri and its like-branded models selling more than 75,000 units by 2018. A new report from Motoring.com.au now indicates that these goals have cooled to a point where Maserati chief, Harald Wester, is a little stand-off-ish about them.

At the Geneva Auto Show, reporters were expectedly curious about the sports coupe, but the Maserati head deflected questions in abrupt and brash ways. When asked about whether the model is on schedule or not, he replied “I don’t know. I need to talk to my people,” then gave the standard “no comment” when asked if it will launch in 2017. This lack of clarity leads me to believe that the Alfieri is way off target and has likely been pushed back a few years to at least 2019 or 2020.

Folks continued pressuring the executive about the Alfieri’s production, and he then revealed that the replacements for the GranTurismo and Gran Cabrio would come first. With that, he was asked whether the new convertible would still be a four-seat rig or if it would move to a two-seat setup to which he replied “We never told anybody whether the convertible is two, or 2+2 or four-seat car. I’ve no intention to tell you.”

Well, Mr. Poopy Pants, I guess someone relieved themselves in your Corn Flakes that morning. Or maybe he needed a Snickers…

While it is no shock to see that the GranTurismo and GranCabrio replacements will come before the new sports coupe, things are starting to look like they are way off the mark in terms of timing. This is likely why there was so much snark in Wester’s replies—the truth likely is that he has no clue and is just trying to get out of the questions by being a bit of an ass.

We’ll keep an eye out for more info on the Alfieri and bring you updates as they become available.
