The new Corvette Stingray is red hot when it comes to performance, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that the car is completely obliterating rival vehicles when it comes to sales. GM Authority has broken down sales data from the North American Dealers Association Used Car Guide, producing some rather interesting insights.

Not surprisingly, the Corvette Stingray outsold the Viper and Porsche 911 for the first half of 2014, racking up 17,744 unit sales. Of course the Chevrolet is less expensive and provides plenty of performance thrills, so that fact alone isn’t all that impressive. What is amazing about the data is just how badly the Corvette outsold the other two models. The Porsche 911 fought valiantly, thanks to its borderline fanatical fan base, selling 5,169 units from January through the end of June. Mind you, a highly optioned-up Stingray costs about $15,000 less than a stripped-down, base 911, but at over three times the sales volume the Chevy comes out smelling like roses.

Things are downright ugly when the sales data for the Viper is totaled up. Only 354 units were purchased by consumers during the first half of 2014, which answers why Chrysler has idled production. While the Corvette has obviously appealed to the masses, only a few crazy individuals have chosen to regularly get behind the wheel of the Viper.

For proof that cost isn’t the only factor that has helped the Stingray perform so well, GM Authority also analyzed sales data for the less expensive Nissan 370Z, which is another popular sports car. Only 4,100 units were sold through June, which wasn’t even the same sales volume as the 911.

How long will Chevy dominate sports car sales? With the Corvette ZO6 poised to pounce for the 2015 model year, it doesn’t look like anything will change in the near future.
