Subaru is finally starting to see the hybrid light, as we first saw the XV Crosstrek hybrid, which remains one of the most fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive crossovers, and now there is a new Suby hybrid hitting the market. This time around, it’s the Impreza that’s getting some hybrid love. Unfortunately, the new Impreza Sport Hybrid, as Subaru calls it, is currently available only in Japan.

Under the hood of Subaru’s latest hybrid is a 2.0-liter boxer engine that combines with a battery-fueled electric motor. Unfortunately, Subaru didn’t release the output of this hybrid, but given it likely has the same engine and motor as the XV Crosstrek Hybrid, I will guesstimate its output at 160 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque.

Sending this electrified power out to all four wheels is a continuously variable transmission. Thanks to the specially designed CVT and the electric motor, this Impreza has a great fuel-economy rating of 20.4 km/l (48 mpg) on the Japanese cycle.

Safety is key in a hatchback like this, and Subaru didn’t skimp on these features. Standard on the Impreza Sport Hybrid is Subaru’s EyeSight system, which watches traffic ahead and uses its input to control other safety features. Another standard feature is Eco-Cruise Control, which uses the Adaptive Cruise Control feature of EyeSight to maximize its battery charge and make its regen braking more effective.

The “Sport” in this hybrid’s name is more than just a space filler, as Subaru designed this car to be fun to drive too. The automaker retuned the suspension to deliver better responsiveness and tighter handling. Additionally, 215/50R17 tires replace the gasoline model’s skinnier 205/50R17 tires, giving the Sport Hybrid a better patch of rubber to grip the road.

Other premium features include modified side sills, a revised fascia, a roof-mounted spoiler, and LED taillights on the outside. Inside the cabin, the Impreza Sport Hybrid gains blue accents, piano-black panels, and metallic trim. Optionally, buyers can fit their model with silver Ultrasuede seats with blue contrast stitching and power seats.

The Subaru Impreza Sport Hybrid will start out at ¥2,320,000 ($18,815) for the 2.0i EyeSight trim and top out at ¥2,440,000 ($19,788) for the 2.0i-S EyeSight trim. There is no mention of when or if this model will make it to the U.S.
