With the coming of the new NSX, Honda and Acura are under extra-special surveillance by us media folks. Today, De Telegraf’s Autovisie uncovered a few patent images depicting what appears to be a mid-engine Honda sports car.

When initially looking at the images, it is easy to immediately tag this as a roadster version of the upcoming NSX. However, a closer examination reveals that there are some significant differences between these patent images and the upcoming NSX. So, what on Earth is Honda working on?

Well, many folks, myself included, feel that this is the rumored successor to the Honda S2000 roadster. This possibility is supported by reports that the new S2000 would take many of its design cues from the NSX, which the car in this image does.

The S2000’s successor has been rumored since just about the day after Honda discontinued it in 2009. Recent rumors have indicated that the resurrected sports car will feature a 2.0-liter turbocharge four-cylinder behind the seats. What’s more, other reports have tipped a hybrid version of the S2000 with more than 350 horsepower and all-wheel drive at its disposal.

For now, it is pretty hard to tell what it is that we’re looking at here. It could even be a concept version of the NSX Roadster, which would explain the liberties in the design. Only time will tell what exactly this is, but it shouldn’t be too long before we start seeing this model testing, given it is an actual production car.

Let us know in the comments below what you think this patent image represents.
