The electric car and hybrid realms are quickly positioning themselves to make a case for replacing massive gasoline engines in supercars, as power and torque number continue to creep into the range of completely ridiculous. First we had the Tesla Model S P85, then came the Model S P85D with its dual-motor system, and now BMW is joining in on the fun with a 500-plus-kW (670-plus-horsepower) plug-in hybrid concept all its own. Meet the 5 Series GT Power eDrive concept.
You read that right, BMW took the god-awful hideous 5 Series GT and packed it full of enough horses to make a Ferrari take notice. This massive output comes from three sources: a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo gasoline unit and two electric motors, one driving each axle. Specifically, the rear electric motor comes to the party with 200 kW (268 horsepower) while the front motor chimes in with another 150 kW (201 horses) and the gasoline engine fills the gap with another 150 kW (201 horsepower). This trio of powerplants is good for 500-plus kW and 737 pound-feet of twist.
Fueling the electric motors is a 20-kWh, lithium-ion battery pack that BMW positioned under the rear seats in inside the now-vacant drive axle tunnel. On a full charge, this battery pack will allow the 5 Series GT Power eDrive concept to stroll a full 62 miles. When needed — if the batteries are depleted or the driver needs quicker acceleration — the TwinPower Turbo engine awakens and provides a boost.
In total, the 5 Series GT Power eDrive concept can travel 370 miles, thanks to the eight-gallon fuel tank — the standard 5 Series GT has an 18-gallon tank. Unfortunately, BMW did not release its performance specifications, but I wouldn’t expect it to take any longer than 4.5 seconds to hit 60 mph and it’ll likely top out at Germany’s favorite top speed of 155 mph.
There are no details on when or if this concept will become a reality, but I think we’ll see it on public roads in just a few years.
