Audi Reveals the New R8’s Laser Headlights
We’re all awaiting the debut of the new-generation Audi R8 supercar, which will arrive at the 2015 Geneva Auto Show, and Audi saw it fit to drive us nuts with a new teaser image. In this image, the German automaker is highlighting the new R8’s headlights, which will feature the super-high-tech laser beam as an available option.
This system uses a single laser module and four high-intensity laser diodes to create a bright blue beam – the signature of laser headlights. Then a phosphor convertor changes the color of the beam from blue to bright white to illuminate more of the road ahead – laser lights have nearly twice the lighting range of LEDs. Unfortunately, laser headlights are still not approved for use on the roads of America, but I am sure we’ll see them get the necessary approval soon.
Audi went on to confirm that the next-generation R8 will come standard with LED headlights that feature 37 individual LEDs per headlight.
This new teaser image also comes to confirm that the “leaked” image of the R8 that was circulating the Internet last week was a complete fake. The headlights and front intake don’t even look similar to this teaser image, proving that you have to take everything you see on the Interwebz with a grain of salt.
Keep it locked here for all of the details, as the Geneva Auto Show kicks off on March 3 for the media, and we’ll bring you all of the official details once they are available. Until then, we are sure to see a few more teaser images and possibly a few legit leaks.
