Rumors of a Mid-Engine Corvette C8 Cause a Stir

Every so often a rumor about GM contemplating a mid-engine configuration for the Corvette crops up, but of course nothing ever comes of it. Because of this pattern, it might not seem like a big deal that yet again rumors are flying that a future Corvette with an engine in the middle is coming, but this time the rumor is being promoted by the respectable and influential Motor Trend. That makes this round of ‘Vette rumors relevant, or at least more interesting.

According to unnamed sources, Motor Trend claims that the next Corvette ZR1 will be a mid-engine model, foregoing the traditional front-engine configuration that has survived seven generations so far. While the C7 ZR1 will be an anomaly in the Corvette lineup, those nameless sources claim that Chevrolet is very seriously considering changing the layout for the entire C8 generation so that all models have the engine in the middle.

Everyone knows that a mid-engine layout offers advantages when it comes to handling, which is why it’s featured on so many supercars. According to the rumors, that’s not what’s fueling the proposed change. Instead, it’s the fact that the next-generation Camaro might drop enough weight to undercut the C7 ‘Vette. In an effort to justify the Corvette’s position at the top of the Chevrolet lineup, the company is looking to take America’s Sports Car into uncharted, more exotic waters.

For now, the entire mid-engine layout thing is just rumors. Until GM shows off a concept vehicle or makes an official announcement, this is right up there with all the other wild claims in the automotive industry.
