Mercedes Readies the SLC’s Demise

It’s not easy saying goodbye to a friend, especially one who brought a lot of joy into your life. The best way to do it is to think of the good times, and that’s exactly how Mercedes is handling the sun setting on the SLC roadster.

We don’t have enough two-seater convertibles in the world today, so it’s hard to see one drive off into the sunset. At least the SLC Final Edition will give the car a nice send-off, and it’s coming with a nice, cheery attitude.

Back in 1996, the SLK revolutionized roadsters with its folding hardtop. For people who lived in colder climates, it meant enjoying the car for more months out of the year. It was also fun and relatively affordable, compared to other performance models the automaker offered.

Tumbling sales have doomed the SLC. Fewer than 2,000 were purchased in 2018, which is pretty dismal. While that’s not upbeat, Mercedes decided to offer the Final Edition model of the SLC in sun yellow. The paint color hearkens back to the yellowstone paint used for the original SLK, which turned a lot of heads.

The Mercedes-AMG SLC 43 Final Edition dresses up with a two-tone nappa black and silver leather upholstery, alpaca grey topstitching and seatbelts, plus carbon leather for the steering wheel, gear selector, and head restraints. It’s a fitting way of sending a good car off into the sunset, another victim of the crossover craze.
