The Mercedes-AMG GT and GT S are already reeling in plenty of accolades, but Mercedes isn’t ready to roll over and call this a victory yet. Instead, a report from Motor Trend indicates the automaker is hard at work creating an even more extreme version of its new sports car that it will dub the GT R.

This report does not give out any details about what powers the upcoming GT R, but it does dive deep into how the German brand plans to upgrade its handling. This new version of the GT will supposedly have a revised chassis that includes the industry’s first adjustable spool-valve shocks, which, in simplified terms, are more predictable at high speeds due to their lack of lift and flutter at higher damper frequencies. Rounding out the chassis mods are all-wheel steering and larger rear rubber patches.

Also helping in the handling department are some modifications to the GT’s aerodynamics. While there are no specifics, the report indicates that the GT R will use active aerodynamics, which will change the properties of the aero kit with the vehicle’s speeds. The most obvious addition would be an active rear spoiler, but this could also mean an active front spoiler, grilles, etc.

Though there were no specifics given about the powertrain, the report does claim it will have “gobs more power.” Given the GT S has 503 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, I would think that somewhere in the range of 550 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque would be reasonable.

This new version of the Mercedes-AMG GT will supposedly arrive near the end of 2016, so look for it to start showing its face in testing sessions very soon.

Keep it locked here for more details on the GT R as they become available.
