The Geneva Motor Show means insane supercars and hypercars. The Bugatti Chiron turned a lot of heads, grabbing all kinds of “fastest supercar in the world” headlines. Now the Swedes have revealed the absolutely insane Regera plug-in hybrid packs over 1,500 horsepower in a package that tips the scales at just 3,505 pounds.

I’ll save you the time of looking up the Chiron’s curb weight, because it’s comparatively a porker with almost 1,000 additional pounds. Oh, and it puts out 1,478 horsepower.

While on paper the Regera sounds like it’d be faster, it actually isn’t. Still, the hypercar is impressive, with a 0 to 62 time of 2.8 seconds and 0 to 124 in 6.6 seconds. It does blow away the Chiron in a 0 to 186 mph, doing it in 10.9 seconds versus 13.5 seconds. The Regera thrusts from 0 to 248 mph in just 20 seconds. No word if Koenigsegg will sell a change of shorts with each one, because that might be necessary for anyone who actually tries to replicate these numbers.

Previously, Koenigsegg showed off a concept Regera. The Swedes say they’ve made over 3,000 changes between that and the production version that was just revealed in Geneva.

The hybrid powertrain is quite impressive. A twin-turbo 5.0-liter V-8 that makes 1,100 horsepower is part of the setup, and it’s positioned in the middle of the car. Joined to it is a 160 kW or 215 horsepower electric motor, which drives the engine’s crankshaft. It fills in as a starter motor, power generator and torque assist. Two 180 kW or 241 horsepower electric motors are mounted to the driveshaft in the car’s rear. The 800-volt battery pack is a first for any production car.

Oh, and there’s no transmission. Backing up is accomplished by switching the rear motors into reverse.

All kinds of other technological marvels are packed into the Koenigsegg Regera, like sub frame active soft mounts, which stiffen when the driver punches it. Owners will be able to take off the top and put it into the frunk. The doors, rear hatch, hood and rear wing can be opened remotely thanks to Hydraulics – Koenigsegg calls this Autoskin. The headlights are actively vented with fans and vents. There are many more crazy innovations in the Regera, which we’ll no doubt be hearing about for months to come.
