IIHS Names the 15 Safest Vehicles of 2018

Some automakers likely despise the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and its habit of moving the goalposts every few years. For buyers, though, this means safer cars, fewer fatal crashes, and, potentially fewer crashes altogether. The IIHS just released its report on its choices for 2018 Tops Safety Pick+ honors, and only 15 models have initially qualified.

First, what’s changed in the 2018 rating system. Well, to be a Top Safety Pick+, vehicles must now receive “Good” ratings in the headlight test and an “Acceptable” or “Good” rating in passenger-side protection in a small-overlap crash. Previously, the minimum headlight requirements was “Acceptable” and the passenger-side safety in a small-overlap crash was not a requirement.

In the next step down, the Top Safety Pick category, the IIHS added a minimum “Acceptable” headlight rating. In 2017, the headlights weren’t a factor. A total of 47 models have qualified for this rating so far. Toyota leads the pack with 10, but Hyundai isn’t far behind with nine.

So, what 2018 models have received the top honors so far? Here they are:

  • BMW 5 Series
  • Genesis G80
  • Genesis G90
  • Hyundai Santa Fe
  • Hyundai Santa Fe Sport
  • Kia Forte Sedan
  • Kia Soul
  • Lincoln Continental
  • Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan
  • Subaru Impreza Sedan
  • Subaru Impreza Wagon
  • Subaru Legacy
  • Subaru Outback
