Ever since it was announced, people have been eagerly awaiting the $35,000 Tesla Model 3. That patience has been rewarded, because Tesla officially announced that the budget version of its sedan is available now.
While it is the base trim, the $35,000 Model 3 has 220 miles of range and can do 0-60 in 5.6 seconds. It also can hit 130 mph. Many consider this to be the best deal Tesla offers, and maybe the best deal on an electric car.
Tesla had to throw in a few other surprises. One is a Model 3 Standard Range Plus, which sells for $37,000. It has 240 miles of range, a 0-60 time of 5.3 seconds, and a top speed of 140 mph. According to Tesla, the car also comes with “most” premium interior features. Considering how spartan the Model 3 interior is, that’s an interesting statement. Anyway, this version is arguably an even better deal.
To keep costs down and be able to offer such deals on electric cars, Tesla announced it’s selling cars only online. That’s bad news for Tesla salespeople, who maybe didn’t see someone was going to move their cheese. Of course, with only online sales, shoppers can buy a Tesla even if their state doesn’t allow it. That’s pretty tricky.
A few Tesla stores will stay open, but they will become galleries, showcases, and Tesla info centers only. Presumably, you’ll still be able to take a Tesla for a test drive.
