According to the press release, GM’s engineers spent 9 million hours working on computerized models of the new Camaro. This allowed them to tweak things here and there, and see where they can save weight without losing rigidity or add stiffness without excessive weight gain. This computer work resulted in a model that was 28 percent stiffer than the 2015 Camaro without them ever needing to build an actual prototype.

This additional stiffness without added heft allowed the engineers the freedom to design the wheels and brakes accordingly. Instead of having to compensate for body roll and heavy loads, the engineers could focus more on reducing unsprung weight – weight not supported by the springs, like the wheels, tires, and brakes.

Reduced unsprung weight results in snappier performance because the suspension does not have to work as hard to overcome inertia to keep the tires planted on the road. This may seem like a small thing, but it can make huge difference in corners. Add to that the stiffer chassis and body, and the 2016 Camaro is poised to be a great performer in the twisty stuff.

There are still plenty of details that are unknown, so make sure to check back regularly for updates. Chevy will unveil the Camaro on May 16th, and it should release the majority of the juicy information, like the drivetrain and design, at that time. Until then, enjoy the random teasers and bits of information leading up to its unveiling.
