Cadillac’s latest sedan, the CT6, hit showrooms last year to plenty of fanfare. There was, however, one sore spot for some buyers, and that was the fact that it debuted without a V-8 engine. Instead, it debuted with a standard turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and two optional V-6 engines, but no V-8. According to a new report from Car and Driver, the wait for a V-8-powered CT6 may soon be over.

This new engine will reportedly be a 4.2-liter twin-turbocharged unit that shares none of its architecture with any other GM motivator. According to Cadillac CEO, Johan de Nysschen, this new V-8 will tickle the upper 400-horsepower range and mate to an eight-speed auto transmission, making it a significant upgrade over the 400-horsepower twin-turbo V-6 that currently tops the range.

One question that is likely running through the minds of enthusiasts is whether this will be a V-Series model. According the de Nysschen, this model will not be a part of the V-Series lineup. It will actually be an option on the Platinum trim level and will wear a “4.2 TT” badge.

There is no mention to when the new 4.2-liter V-8 powerplant will grace the engine compartment of Caddy’s new flagship. If I were a betting man, however, I would say late 2016 to early 2017 is the best bet. Once it does hit the market, however, it will not be available worldwide. Cadillac told Car and Driver that this engine will not be available in China where there is an extra tax added to cars with engine displacements over 4.0 liters.

We’ll keep a close eye on this developing story and bring you more details later.
