Mercedes May Make Several G-Wagon Crossover Models
Mercedes keeps finding ways to milk its cash cows, and now it’s the G-Wagon’s turn. With a new generation launching, now’s the ideal time to launch a line of crossovers loosely based on the military-oriented SUV.
Basically, they will be vehicles for rich people who want to look tough and rugged while they go to Nordstrom’s.
Autobild, an automotive publication out of Germany, has the inside scoop. Reportedly, at least one crossover is coming, and it will be called the GLB. It will ride on the same platform as the GLA, complete with a higher ride height and underbody protection. This crossover won’t be boxy at all, but like the Ener-G concept from a while ago, it will look kind of like it can off-road. Don’t be fooled.
The idea is to launch a new lineup that will compete directly against the Range Rover product family. This is happening as Land Rover is flexing its muscles and intruding more into Mercedes’ SUV market.
Autobild doesn’t say if a truck-based G-Wagon model is coming. Some think it is, others don’t. Me, I land in the former camp. The G-Wagon has too much of a following around the globe to soften it up completely.
