Volvo has wowed the world with the all-new 2016 XC90, and it reportedly will be doing it again in the near future as it reveals the all-new S90 sedan and V90 wagon. The two new models are based on the automaker’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, which is also used on the 2016 XC90. That means they’ll share powertrains and some other features.

The S90 will replace the rather boring S80 sedan, a car that’s incredibly forgettable. It will be going against the likes of the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5 Series, which is a highly competitive part of the market, yet Volvo seems confident in how the S90 will perform. The V90 will have little direct competition in the United States.

During an interview with Autocar, Nick Connor, who is the head of Volvo in the UK, said that the company’s not going to try to beat the Germans at their own game. Instead, Volvo will be honing in on its strengths like it has done with the XC90, which is already outpacing sales expectations before it even launches.

According to Connor, the S90 and V90 should shock everyone more than the new XC90. The sedan and wagon’s designs sound like they will be even more dramatic, something that Volvo’s in desperate need of lately.

If Volvo’s recent concepts are an indication of what’s in store, Volvo could definitely be setting itself apart in the market with some compelling new vehicles. The Volvo Concept Coupe, which was revealed in 2013, took everyone completely by surprise. The company originally revealed a side view of the car so no badges showed, catching even seasoned automotive journalists off guard once it was revealed that the creator was Volvo. In 2014 the Volvo Concept Estate excited quite a few people with its unique take on wagon design.

Volvo fully expects the S90 and V90 to be big sales hits in the United States and China. With the current success the company is enjoying, expect to see a transformation of the entire model lineup in the coming years.
