When I saw the Camaro convertible’s images leak onto the interwebz, I knew it was only a matter of days before GM decided to officially debut the model. Then again, was it really that much of a surprise? It’s a 2016 Camaro with a retractable top… gasp!

In all seriousness though, the new Camaro body does look pretty slick with the top pulled down. I am not too sure if it’s the smaller footprint or the slightly revised bodylines, but it just looks right. Operating the top is pretty simple too, as it features automatic lathes that release and secure the top. Additionally, you can open the top at speeds up to 30 mph, so no need to come to a complete stop, engage the parking brake, then drop the top like some convertibles.

If you would like to drop the top before you even get to the car, you can do this too. Chevrolet is including a button on the keyfob that you press to remotely lower the top. For us folks here in New England, that’s a key feature, as our time with convertible-friendly weather is limited, so we can’t waste precious seconds waiting for the top to drop while we’re in the car.

Once the top is securely stowed behind the rear seats, a hard tonneau cover automatically deploys, covering up the folded top. This adds a level of refinement to the Camaro, and really makes it look right as a drop top.

Other than its retractable top, the 2016 Camaro convertible shares the rest of its features with its coupe sibling. This means that it is up to 200 pounds lighter than its predecessor, features a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 275 horsepower, and also has a new 3.6-liter V-6 available with 335 horses. Also available in the Camaro convertible is the optional LT1 6.2-liter V-8 that cranks out 455 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque. All three engines are available with either a six-speed auto or manual transmission.

The 2016 Camaro convertible will arrive in early 2016, and pricing will be released in the near future.
