The CX-5 is only a few years old, but automakers need to stay on their toes in the ever-growing crossover segment. This is why we are ramping up to see the CX-5 receive its first facelift after only three model years. While we all expect to see the new updated crossover debut in the LA Auto Show alongside its Mazda2 sibling, PaulTan.org managed to dig up what appear to be leaked images of the upcoming model.
If these images are in fact of the 2016 CX-5, then we can rest assured that Mazda will carry some of the styling cues from its small hatchback up to its current, entry-level crossover. According to these images, the headlight and taillight graphics are close to those seen on the Mazda2, though they seem to have a little more detail than the tiny 2’s lights. Also new are the horizontal slats on the front grille, which will replace the honeycomb-like grille on the 2015 model and give the CX-5 a more mature appearance.
What I cannot see in these images is the interior, so I can only guess that it’ll likely have an updated infotainment system and maybe some new trim here and there.
Other than the styling changes, I expect to see the same lineup of engines, as Mazda’s Skyactiv2 engine lineup is not quite ready. This means buyers will have the choice of either a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, or a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque.
Keep it locked here to find out more on the upcoming crossover and find out if the 2016 CX-5 does debut at the 2014 LA Auto Show with its smaller Mazda2 sibling.
