The Nissan Sentra Finally Gets the NISMO Treatment
The Nissan Sentra SE-R first arrived in 1993 as one of the best sport compact cars to ever roll off a factory line at the time. It wasn’t overly powerful at 140 horsepower, but it was very lightweight and had an updated suspension system that made it as nimble as any car in its class. From there, the SE-R became a bloated shell of its former self throughout the 2000s and slowly fizzled out. Now, a new Sentra NISMO has arrived to fill this long-vacant gap.
The Sentra NISMO arrived at the LA Auto Show to many people’s surprise. Not since the 2013 Sentra NISMO Concept did Nissan even hint at the legendary badge gracing the Sentra lineup.
The NISMO will carry the same 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the SR Turbo model, which produces 188 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or a specially tuned Xtronic CVT for gear-swapping duties.
Sure, the NISMO Sentra has the same running gear as the SR Turbo model, this model sets itself apart in terms of appearance and other under-the-skin tweaks. These upgrades include 18-inch NISMO wheels, a NISMO-tuned steering and suspension system, unique front and rear fascias with the NISMO red stripe, NISMO side sills, a NISMO rear spoiler, and a NISMO front grille.
Inside, the upgrades include NISMO gauges, bolstered NISMO front seats, a NISMO leather shift knob, and an Alcantara- and leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Nissan hasn’t announced when the 2017 Sentra NISMO will hit showroom floors, nor has it announced official pricing. It does, however, expect it to start under $25,000.
Stay tuned for updates.
