Tesla Will Charge Model 3 Owners For Supercharger Use

The Tesla Model 3 is cheap, and that means there won’t be a free lunch that comes along with it. Via a new report from Automotive News, we have Elon Musk himself saying that the company will almost definitely charge for anyone to hook up the budget-friendly EV to any of the Superchargers.

Musk said this during the company’s annual shareholder meeting. People who’ve invested in the company are obviously concerned that the huge glut of Model 3 orders could translate into lost revenue with the Supercharger network.

From the CEO’s comments, it sounds like Tesla will be selling an optional package that would allow Model 3 owners to use the Superchargers without paying for the privilege each time. There’s no word on pricing for the package or single use, but Musk did say it would be cheaper than pumping gas.

People are upset about this new revelation already. If you don’t recall, Musk said during the Model 3 reveal that Supercharging capability would come standard on the car. The key word is “capability.” Using that capability is going to cost extra. How did everyone think Tesla could sell the Model 3 for so cheap?
