Subaru Set to Reveal the WRX STI Type RA

The Subaru WRX is far and away one of my favorite cars, as it perfectly combines sportiness, family friendliness, and off-tarmac capabilities. But it certainly has room for improvement. Today, Subaru has announced that it’ll push the WRX just a bit with a new Type RA model.

The details surrounding the WRX Type RA are under tight lock and key, but there are a few expectations. The most obvious of the expectations is the carbon-fiber roof that’s plainly visible in the teaser image. This will help reduce weight and lower the WRX’s center of gravity.

In addition to the carbon-fiber roof, we’ll likely see enhanced aerodynamics, a re-tuned suspension, and possibly a more potent engine. The latter is the big wildcard, as the current STI’s turbocharged 2.5-liter is already quite potent at 305 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. Subaru likely could push this as high as 350 horses without any major mods, but I assume it’ll only jump to 325 at the most.

Luckily, we won’t have to wait too awful long to learn what the Type RA is all about, as Subie will debut it in full on June 8. What’s more, a special Type RA NBR will attempt to break the four-door lap record on the Nürburgring.

Stay tuned for updates.
