Mike Horn has made a name for himself as a “modern day explorer.” He’s traversed all over the globe and documented his adventures for others to enjoy from the comfort of their couch. Now, Horn is embarking on a new journey that is also proving that the Mercedes G-Class is one tough SUV.

He started off in his home country of Switzerland, with the plan of passing through 12 countries in 15 days. His destination is Skardu, Pakistan where his team will scale K2. Once they reach the summit, they will mostly ski down, which is quite frankly pretty much insane. Supposedly, the whole purpose is to show the world’s population how beautiful some incredibly remote areas are.

To get through all of the difficult terrain, Mike Horn and his team are taking along two Mercedes G-Class. People who are familiar with the G-Class or G-Wagon know that it was created over 35 years ago for military applications. When a contract fell through, Mercedes decided that civilians would enjoy the SUV’s go-anywhere capabilities, which proved spot on.

As part of the preparation for the journey, Mike Horn and his team went through an intensive training in Graz, Austria. They learned how to tackle the kind of difficult terrain they inevitably are facing on the trek.

The automaker has even posted an interactive map that shows where the team is located at any moment. Fans can also post their own exploration photo on Twitter or Instagram using the #DrivenToExplore or #GWagon hashtags, automatically entering to win an unspecified prize for the best photo.
