The M3- and M4-rivaling ATS-V is awesome enough in its own right, but a new “exclusive” report from Motor Trend claims that Cadillac isn’t quite finished putting fear into the eyes of the Germans. This report claims that Caddy is seriously considering creating an ATS-V+ that makes use of the same 7.0-liter LS7 V-8 as the current-generation Z/28 and the C6 Z06.

This engine, which GM hand builds in Bowling Green, KY, produces 505 horsepower and 481 pound-feet of torque in its latest configuration (the Camaro Z/28). That would not only give the ATS-V+ an extra 41 horsepower and 36 pound-feet of torque to tease Bimmer with, but it also would weigh less than the current 3.6-liter twin-turbo V-6, according to the report.

For now, this report is precisely that, a report. However, it would be a great way for GM to spread the cost of the LS7 and to increase the output of the ATS-V+ without resorting to boost. What’s more, the reduced weight will help Cadillac balance out the weight ratios of the ATS-V to make an even more insane, track-ready monster.

So, will Cadillac actually build the ATS-V? On paper it seems to make sense. First, a 7.0-liter-powered ATS-V+ would split the gap between the ATS-V and the CTS-V nicely. Second, this would give Cadillac a legit rival to the Mercedes-AMG C63 S. Finally, it would give Cadillac something to brag about to BMW.

Despite all of those pros, I still don’t feel there is a great market for this kind of car, and it could pull precious sales away from the two existing V-Series models. However, Cadillac is now under the control of Johan de Nysschen, who loves nothing more than sticking it to BMW and Mercedes.

Stay tuned for more details.
