Rumors have already indicated that Nissan was on its way toward pushing the Leaf to new heights in terms of range. Today, we learn just how far the automaker will push the range of the 2016 Leaf, as it has released all the specs on the new EV. On top of the extended range, there are several other new bits added to the electric hatchback.

In terms of looks, the Leaf remains completely unchanged. What does change is the fact that Nissan will now have an optional battery pack. This new pack, which is standard on the SV trim level, is a 30 kWh unit that allows the Leaf to travel up to 107 miles on a charge, according to the EPA. This puts the Leaf at the top of its very small class.

In its base setup, the Leaf will continue with the same 24 kWh battery. Like the 2015 model, the Leaf with this battery can travel 84 miles on a charge.

Though its range is extended, the 2016 Leaf’s electric engine continues to produce 107 horsepower and 187 pound-feet of torque. While the power isn’t impressive, the fact that full torque is immediately available makes the Leaf feel quicker than it actually is.

Nissan also took the standard equipment in the Leaf to a new level, as NissanConnect with Mobile Apps with a 5-inch color display is now standard. On SV and SL trims, Nissan is including a 7-inch touchscreen, NissanConnect with MobileApps, and Nissan Voice Recognition.

The final tweaks for the new model year are three new premium exterior hues: Forged Bronze, Coulis Red and Deep Blue Pearl.

As for pricing, the 2016 Nissan Leaf S will start at $29,010 prior to credits from Uncle Sam.  Buyers who prefer the upgraded infotainment system and 30 kWh battery of the SV trim will need to pay $34,200 before the $7,500 tax credit. For those who want the range-topping SL trim will need to shell out $36,790 before tax incentives.
