Totally Insane Golf R400 Will See Production

The hot-hatch market is set to get a heck of a lot hotter, as VW has just confirmed to Car magazine that the Golf R400 will indeed make its way to production. The news comes by way of an interview with VW group powertrain chief, Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser. During the interview, Neusser confirmed the model by saying, “We have the Golf more sporty than ever before, since we soon will have the Golf R400 – we will do this car.”

This upcoming super-hatch will make use of the 2.0-liter engine that VW group unveiled in the Audi TT 420. The “420” in its name indicates that it’ll boast 420 PS, which converts to 414 horsepower here in the U.S. There is no mention of when production of this hatchback will commence, but Car seems to think we’ll see it in just a few months, possibly at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show in September.

Also unknown at this point are the final output numbers. The report claims that it will be at least 400 ponies, but it could creep up the 414 horsepower of the original concept. This model will also receive upgraded brakes to help handle this extra power and all-wheel drive for added grip.

As for styling, expect Volkswagen to keep things pretty timid as it usually does. Look for only a spoiler and a light aerodynamic package to help it at higher speeds.

Initial price estimates put the Golf R400 at under €50,000 in its home market. Unfortunately, there is no mention of a U.S. debut, but I am sure it will make it to our shores eventually.
