Cadillac Stopped ELR Production and Nobody Cared

Cadillac made the ELR and hardly anyone bought one, despite the controversial TV commercials. It was hardly the Cadillac of electric cars. Now, the company has ended production of the range-assisted EV.

According to a report from Hybrid Cars, this happened back in February of this year. People are just now noticing. Months later there are still some ELRs gathering dust on dealer lots. They’ll probably stay there for a while, considering only 95 were scooped up nationwide in April.

There were a lot of missteps with the ELR. Hopefully Cadillac learned from its mistakes. It was an obscenely expensive vehicle, but even lowering the price didn’t help. The brand didn’t seem to understand that people who want an EV aren’t necessarily looking for a design that looks like it came straight off a sixth grader’s sketchpad.

Don’t expect to see a replacement for the ELR, because Cadillac wisely isn’t making one. Instead, it’s regular lineup will become more electrified, starting with the plug-in hybrid version of the CT6.

Maybe one day, several years into the future when the ELR has been completely erased from everyone’s memory, Cadillac will launch another EV. And hopefully it won’t be a funky version of the Chevy Bolt, with a base price of $80,000.
