McLaren Reveals the Race-Ready 650S Sprint
McLaren has been mighty busy as of late, with the introduction of its 650S and promoting the wares of its MSO program. It has also been hard at work revealing various racing versions of its latest supercars too, as we’ve already seen the likes of the P1 GTR and the 650S GT3. As if those two mighty racers aren’t enough, McLaren is adding a new one — dubbed the 650S Sprint — and the new racer is set to debut at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Despite a debut that is just around the corner, McLaren has revealed a good bit of details on this race.
This aerodynamically enhanced racer comes fitted with the same 3.8-liter, twin-turbo V-8 was its road-going counterpart. All signs point toward it having the same output as its road-going sibling, putting it at 641 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque.
A huge part of racing is keeping things cool. Helping this racer’s 3.8-liter engine cool on the track is a GT3-developed radiator and a GT3-like hood design with ducts for heat extraction.
The 650S sits significantly lower than its road-going cousin, and its adaptive spring rates allow for nearly limitless configurations. Keeping the 650S Sprint glued to the road are 19-inch, center-lock wheels wrapped up in Pirelli slick or wet tires. The chassis also features an on-board air jacks and a race-prepped braking system with Brake Steer for later braking going into the corners.
Inside the cabin, the focus on racing is again evident. The 650S Sprint comes standard with just a single HANS-approved racing seat, an FIA-approved roll cage, and air conditioning. Yes, that’s right, this race car has an air conditioning system included. McLaren didn’t dive into the details of this A/C system, but it will likely be a basic manual system.
Buyers can opt for a series of additions for their 650S Sprint, including front wing louvers, a carbon-fiber fixed rear wing and front splitter, a passenger seat with six-point harness, and a lightweight polycarbonate front windshield.
The 650S Sprint will carry a base price of £198,000 ($331,861.66) and will go up from there, depending on options.
