Fiat is Resurrecting the Tipo as a Sedan
Fiat, like so many European automakers, has moved to the two-box hatchback design as its go-to look. Believe it or not, this is about to change soon, as the Italian brand will resurrect the Tipo name and slap it on a new three-box sedan.
The Tipo, which was previewed by the Aegea Project that the brand unveiled at the Istanbul Motor Show, is pretty big for a Fiat at 4.5 m (177.2 inches) long and 1.78 m (70.1 inches) tall. It rides on a 2.64 m (103.9-inch) wheelbase and can carry up to 510 liters (18 cubic feet) of cargo in its trunk. This larger-than-normal body is also surprisingly stylish, with aggressive lines, a shapely hood, a wide grille that meets the headlights, and sharp front apron.
Fiat didn’t go too deep into the cabin, but it did give us a little information. In here, the Tipo will carry FCA’s Uconnect touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth audio streaming, a rearview camera, and TomTom satellite.
The Tipo will arrive with four available engines, including two diesels and two gasoline units. Fiat didn’t reveal much info on these engines, but it did reveal that the output will range from 95 to 120 horsepower. The Tipo will offer both automatic and manual transmissions – options will vary, depending on the engine.
Fiat has not officially revealed the Tipo’s target market, nor has it announced pricing details. It did, however, announce that it is a global model. Chances are, this model will start in developing markets in Asia and Europe. If it is successful in those markets, then it will make its way to the U.K. It’ll likely never make it to showrooms in the U.S.
