Multiple sources are confirming that Land Rover is preparing to launch a whole line of SVX models which will be geared at extreme off-roading. The new SUVs will be produced by Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division, which has already produced the F-Type Project 7, Range Rover Sport SVR and the SVAutobiography.

The news first broke during a Car and Driver interview with John Edwards, the head of SVO. Edwards wouldn’t say exactly which Land Rover models will get the extreme treatments, but you can probably safely assume that the Range Rover Evoque is at the bottom of the list of potential candidates.

Just how extreme will the new models be? Supposedly, the source of inspiration SVO is using comes from the Defender models that are entered in the Dakar endurance rally. Among the modifications will be gear that protects against the rigors of driving on serious trails, plus other performance upgrades. That could result in an LR4 or Discovery Sport that is on the same level of mind-blowing goodness as the Ford Raptor.

When asked if the new models will be as extreme as the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6 or the Bowler Wildcat, Edwards replied that such vehicles were possibilities. He also put in that SVO could produce a Land Rover model that would be as crazy as both of those vehicles combined, which has set off a flurry of speculations about what kinds of insane SUVs will be arriving at dealers in the near future.

Either Land Rover is full of a lot of talk right now, or it has some serious aces up its sleeves. As some big car shows near, particularly in Europe, we might get a surprise peek at something that could genuinely knock the socks off every off-road enthusiast in the world. Even the Jeep guys might silently admire the work Land Rover’s doing, although don’t expect them to admit that out loud.
