BMW Adds to its M Performance Stable
It wasn’t that long ago that you could count all the BMW M models on one hand. Today, it’s difficult to keep track of them all. While the Bavarian model range has expanded, the M Performance lineup has absolutely exploded, and there are two brand new additions: the 2020 BMW X5 M50i and X7 M50i.
While some people will just worship the badges on these things, enthusiasts are more interested in what’s under the skin. Both actually really bring it with the top version of the N63 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V-8 engine. That means a maximum 523 horsepower and 553 lb.-ft. of torque. Thanks in part to the eight-speed sport automatic transmission, the larger crossover can sprint from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. If you choose the X5, it actually does it even faster at 4.1 seconds.
You get other M Sport goodies on these two Bimmers, like a differential, exhaust system, plus M GmbH suspension tuning that’s different for each one. BMW will try to tell you it’s like getting a sports car experience, but such talk is a product of marketing spin. People won’t care as long as they can haul their IKEA purchases and take the kids to soccer practice in style.
Of course with great power and flashy looks come a steep price tag. The BMW X5 M50i will set you back a cool $83,145 while the BMW X7 M50i costs $100,595.
