Land Rover has divulged that the next generation of the Discovery, which currently is known as the LR4 in the United States, will have over three different variations. Such news isn’t really that surprising, considering the luxury SUV brand has been expanding out its different product “families” like the Range Rover, which currently is offered in regular, Sport, and Evoque versions.

It has already been confirmed that with the next generation of the Discovery will drop the “LR” name in the United States. Another big shift is that a Discovery Sport model will be released, which presumably will be a smaller SUV based on the Discovery platform.

Only a few new technological innovations have been confirmed for the next generation of the Discovery. An updated Terrain Response system will be included, making the SUV even more worthy of rugged conditions. ON top of that, there is a chance that Land Rover will roll out a new voice-assist “coach’ that will provide audible assistance as drivers negotiate different terrain. That coach might even be able to display instructions in the form of videos on the infotainment screen. Another possible feature is the transparent hood from the Discovery Vision Concept, which allows drivers to see objects and terrain directly in front of the SUV.

As part of the brand’s complete transformation of its Discovery product lineup, executives have hinted at the possibility of including a new model that would be smaller than the Range Rover Evoque. Such a vehicle would provide even better off-road capabilities than the LR2 Freelander, which already outclasses the other vehicles in its market segment. A larger version of the Discovery is also potentially in the works, which would accommodate seven passengers and a fair amount of gear.
