BMW 8 Series Rumors Abound
For a few years now, rumors have been circulating around the automotive industry that BMW will actually resurrect the 8 Series. Some juicy new details have surfaced and are circulating all over the place, so beware that what follows for right now isn’t official and could be once again everyone getting their hopes up.
The word is that by 2020 the new BMW 8 Series will hit the market. Supposedly, in 2018 there will be a concept (maybe multiples) that will take a tour of the big global auto shows.
Exactly what the new 8 Series will be is one big question. Some say BMW is going to stick with a traditional sedan, only making it way nicer than the 7 Series. That could be, considering that the S-Class bests the 7 Series in overall luxury, style, etc. In fact, the rumor is BMW is getting serious about the 8 Series because Mercedes is making a ton of cash off the S-Class.
More likely is the rumor that BMW will make the 8 Series a coupe. If that’s the case, there would possibly be a cabriolet version of the car. The chances of this materializing seem pretty high since there’s definitely a market for such a vehicle – just look at the S-Class Coupe.
Already, BMW has toyed with a few big coupe concepts in the past several years, including the Gran Lusso Coupe, which Pininfarina helped develop.
Different sources are also claiming that BMW is giving serious consideration to making the new 8 Series a Gran Coupe, or one of those four-door coupes with really bad rear headroom. Considering that BMW has already shown an affinity for such vehicles, this seems like a strong possibility as well.
Of course, BMW could go with two or even all three options, creating multiple versions of the 8 Series. That’s fine, as long as it doesn’t dare create an 8 Series Gran Turismo.
