5. 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander
Plenty of compact crossovers exist, but most can only run grocery-getting duties. The all-new 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander actually does pretty well out in the wild, especially on snow-packed roads. Remember that Mitsubishi has also engineered the Evolution, so the all-wheel drive system on the Outlander is actually quite impressive in its capabilities. The Outlander was redesigned with a more crowd-pleasing exterior for 2014. Mitsubishi offers an incredible warranty and a base MSRP below $24,000, making it a great vehicle for outdoor enthusiasts who are on a tight budget and who don’t care about having the “right” badges on their vehicle. Three rows of seating are available, although the third row admittedly is pretty tight. While a four-cylinder engine is available along with a CVT, outdoor enthusiasts should option for the V6 engine since it handles towing, hauling people and gear, and powering through tough terrain with more capability.
