Land Rover Turbos The Evoque And Discovery Sport

The Land Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport are both getting the Ingenium treatment. That means out with the old GTDi engines, and in with some turbo power. Jaguar Land Rover management hopes the switch will draw in more customers, and keep the SUVs abreast of increasing emission and fuel economy standards.

Both Ingenium engines feature 2.0 liters of displacement. The difference is in the turbo setup. With the base option, drivers will command 237 horsepower and 251 lb.-ft. of torque. If that’s just not enough, the upgraded Ingenium pumps out a stout 286 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. With either engine, you get a nine-speed ZF automatic transmission.

Unfortunately, you can’t get the more powerful engine on the Evoque Convertible.

Choosing the more powerful engine boosts the purchase price considerably. You have to pay to play with more horsepower and torque. For example, on the Evoque you’ll shell out an additional $15,500, going off MSRP. That works out to about $316 per additional horsepower.

With the more powerful Ingenium engine, the Evoque does 0 to 60 in a flat 6 seconds. It also tops out at an electronically-governed 144 mph. Just so everyone knows which Evoques have the top engine, Land Rover adds larger bumpers, 20-inch wheels, and a gloss black grille. Discovery Sports gain larger front air intakes, a gloss black grille/side vents, a chrome tailpipe, 20-inch wheels, and a red “Sport” badge.
