Ford Moving EV Production South of the Border

Remember that spat Ford got in with Donald Trump during the election? It was all about vehicle production happening in Mexico and not the United States. Well, it’s happening again, only this time we’re not talking about shifting Focus production south of the border.

Instead, Ford will start making its new long-range electric crossover, possibly called the Model E, in Mexico. Originally, that vehicle was set to roll off the assembly line in Flat Rock, Mich. Taking its place is a new AV, or autonomous vehicle.

Ford’s serious about this move. It told Automotive News that another 150 jobs will be added to the Flat Rock plant. The company also is investing $200 million to make things really move. That’s great, because Ford’s getting whooped by GM in the autonomous tech race, so far.

GM took a nice victory lap when a caravan of Cadillacs used Super Cruise to travel from one end of the US to the other. It generated plenty of favorable press, pumped up GM’s image, and made investors happy. That, and it emphasized that GM will not be left behind in the push toward self-driving cars. Now it’s Ford’s turn to prove it won’t become an antiquated relic of the past. That means a dramatic shift, and risking drawing the ire of the sitting President of the United States.
