Tesla Might Electrify the Sprinter Van
Tesla CEO Elon Musk likes to talk a lot, especially on Twitter. This practice has gotten him in so much trouble he cannot legally be CEO and president of the board for the next while, thanks to a settlement with the SEC. In one of his latest Twitter talk fests, Musk disclosed that he’s interested in working with Daimler on electrifying the Sprinter van.
The current generation of the Sprinter has been turning heads since it debuted back in February. Apparently, Musk is one of the admirers. A fan remarked on Twitter that there needs to be a Tesla commercial van. He called the Sprinter “a great van” and said Tesla will hit up Daimler about dropping an electric powertrain in them.
Of course, both Tesla and Daimler won’t respond to different media outlets as they inquire about this possible collaboration. No automaker would say anything so early in the process, if an all-electric Sprinter is in the works.
Daimler and Tesla have collaborated on a few electrification projects in the past, but Daimler no longer owns any stock in the California automaker.
Surely there’s demand for an all-electric cargo or passenger van – probably both. Just how much demand is a mystery, and that could be what kills the chances of a collaboration moving forward.
