An EV Wave is Coming, and Consumers Might Not Really Care

The electric vehicle revolution is about to come, but it might roar in with a whimper. Bloomberg ran a long article about all the EVs that are coming in the next year or so, contrasting that with low anticipations of demand.
I’ll spare you all the gory details, since the article boils down to a few key points. First, that “tipping point” EV fans love to talk about focuses only on the number of electric models on the market. What people from Ford and other industry sources point out is that while there may be a lot of electric models on the market, sales could still be low. The revolution may still only make up well under 10 percent of vehicle sales, which isn’t very revolutionary.
Sure, you have to start somewhere. But the fact is EV proponents have consistently overstated the demand and influence of electrification. There’s a push-back going on, which is exactly what Bloomberg, of all publications, focused on.
There’s a lot of moving pieces in this industry transformation, so predicting when and how everything will shift away from internal combustion engines is difficult, if not downright impossible. That’s not hating on EVs – it’s being honest about the situation.
