Toyota is About to Jump into the EV Market Big Time

Electric vehicle fanboys love to make fun of Toyota for putting so many resources in hydrogen fuel cells. While Toyota certainly isn’t the only automaker to seriously explore the tech, it’s the most popular target. That could change, because Toyota has a plan to start rolling out a ton of EV models.

Really, it’s not a surprise. Anyone thinking Toyota was going to “fall behind” everyone else obviously isn’t familiar with the company. Toyota’s R&D department is the largest in the industry, which is how Toyota pushed hybrids into popular usage. Again, Toyota wasn’t the first on the scene, but when it jumped in, the tech really took off.

Toyota’s new plan calls for at least 10 new EV models by the early part of the next decade. The first one will hit the hot Chinese market. From there, other parts of the world will get new EVs. If successful, which Toyota has a track record of meeting production goals, it would make the automaker a powerhouse in the EV market.

The plan doesn’t stop there. By 2025, the company will offer electrified versions of every Toyota and Lexus model by 2025. That could be EVs or hybrids.

Why the sudden change of mind? Toyota claims that a breakthrough in battery tech is coming, and that will make EVs more practical for consumers, as well as less costly to make.
