We’re Going to Get Several Variations of the VW Atlas

Crossovers are cash cows in the North American market, and Volkswagen finally gets that. While we have the three-row Atlas, a vehicle that’s been a long time coming, VW isn’t stopping there. VX Vortex says several more versions of the crossover are coming, which means big bucks for Volkswagen.
Supposedly, Volkswagen North America CEO Hinrich Woebcken himself told journalists this week that an Atlas family is coming. He didn’t elaborate, so naturally everyone has been speculating like crazy.
VW Vortex already did the boring job of digging through Volkswagen trademark filings. Among the juicy ones is “Atlas Allsport,” which could indicate a trail-ready version of the crossover. “Atlas Cross Sport” could be a smaller and more maneuverable model.
Could Volkswagen make an Atlas pickup truck? Since it would be produced in the US, the chicken tax — a tariff on light trucks made outside of the U.S. — wouldn’t apply. Sure, such a thing wouldn’t be a hardcore truck, but plenty of people are buying the Honda Ridgeline.
The possibilities could be many. Perhaps Hinrich was talking about an all-electric model? We’ll just have to wait and see.
