Chinese Team Hacks Tesla Model Xs Hard

A team of Chinese white hat hackers demonstrated how easily they can take over all kinds of systems for a Model X. With all the buzz about the Model 3 launch, Tesla probably won’t like the timing of this development.

You can see the hack in action by watching the video above. The guys are able to turn lights off and on, open doors, manipulate the displays in the cabin, and even put the brakes on as the SUV is moving. That last item is of high concern, because it could cause a serious accident.

To Tesla’s credit, it keeps improving security on its vehicles. Just last year, it rolled out a firmware update to prevent a discovered vulnerability. But these hackers showed the automaker’s efforts weren’t enough, at least for someone skilled and determined.

This isn’t to say only Tesla has these kinds of risks. Other connected vehicles might be even easier to hack. It’s a good reminder that everyone needs to stay aware of security risks.
